The process
Building the mobile app for the Tertill weeding robot combined strategic planning with rigorous execution. From validating React Native for real-time control to designing a robust system architecture and choosing a scalable technology stack, every step was taken to make the app effective. Cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud, with extensive QA and stress testing, made the app reliable on iOS and Android, and agile methods kept the work close to the Tertill team.
The design stayed user-centric throughout, grounded in research and collaborative workshops that shaped the app’s features around the client’s objectives. A comprehensive design system made it easy to adapt to evolving needs, interactive prototypes supported user testing and decisions, and a cross-platform strategy met the UX requirements of both iOS and Android.
UI/UX design process
- Research Thorough research tackled the UI/UX challenges and anchored a user-centric design approach.
- Workshops Collaborative workshops guided the client in shaping the app’s features, in line with their vision and objectives.
- Design System A comprehensive design system gave a roadmap for adapting to evolving needs, and gave the development team clarity and efficiency.
- Prototyping Interactive prototypes served for user testing and validating assumptions, supporting informed decisions and stakeholder engagement.
- Cross-Platform Design A cross-platform design strategy met the platform-specific UX requirements, so the app serves iOS and Android users equally well.
Development process
- Proof of Concept Validation A proof of concept confirmed React Native was right for the app, especially for real-time control of the robot over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
- System Architecture Design We designed the system architecture and chose the technology stack, for a strong, scalable foundation.
- Mobile App Development With React Native, we built a feature-rich app to control and schedule the robot, check its status in real time and follow instructions for setting up the garden.
- Cloud Infrastructure Setup A secure, scalable cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud, with Firebase, Cloud Functions, Kubernetes, BigQuery and NoSQL databases, supports data management, firmware releases and efficient DevOps practices.
- Extensive QA and Stress Testing Rigorous testing ensured the app works with the robot on iOS and Android, and stress testing on the robot made the experience reliable and stable.
- Agile Way of Working With a SCRUM methodology, we worked closely with the Tertill team in two-week sprints. Regular reviews and demos kept stakeholders aligned.
The outcome
Salt & Pepper developed the MVP of the Tertill mobile companion app within four months. The app, for iOS and Android, provides weather updates and will add weather predictions in the future.
The process was thorough, from strategic planning and rigorous execution to extensive QA. React Native for real-time control, Google Cloud infrastructure and agile iterations, with a user-centric design backed by research and interactive prototypes, resulted in a seamless and engaging cross-platform experience.
